🌱 Doh Waste Good Food®️: A Bold Caribbean Movement to End Food Waste

UNESCO and Creative Caribbean project

In a region where food is more than sustenance—it’s culture, community, and celebration—wasting it is more than just a missed meal. That’s why we’re proud to launch “Doh Waste Good Food”, a powerful new initiative designed to revolutionize how food waste is managed across the Caribbean’s food and hospitality sectors.

Siel Environmental Services Limited, in partnership with the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean, the CARICOM Secretariat, and The University of the West Indies is proud to officially launch “Doh Waste Good Food®️”, a groundbreaking, bold, and timely programme aimed at transforming food waste management across Caribbean food and hospitality businesses.

Developed under the wider mandate of sustainability and regional empowerment, this initiative brings culture, climate awareness, and business resilience into one powerful movement. This initiative is also a key component of the recently unveiled “Connecting Waste Management, Climate Change and Health in YOUth” project, operating under the Creative Caribbean ecosystem framework.

Tackling Food Waste with Cultural Pride

“Doh Waste Good Food®️” stands on a powerful mission: helping Caribbean food businesses stop wasting what matters. The program recognizes that every discarded plate represents more than financial loss, it symbolizes wasted cultural heritage, community resources, and environmental opportunity.

“In the Caribbean, food is life, and it too blessed to waste,” our CEO, Mrs. Sian Cuffy-Young says. “We are working directly with food and hospitality businesses to fundamentally shift the mindset from ‘throw away’ to ‘make it count,’ embedding purpose behind every bite.”

Youth-Focused Environmental Education

The broader initiative runs from February through August 2025 and targets children aged 5 to 11 through creative educational approaches. The project combines storytelling, interactive learning experiences, and digital animation to nurture a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders.

 Key deliverables include:

  1. A culturally relevant children’s book in the popular Ky’s Magical Adventures series.
  2. An eco-friendly interactive exhibition booth for community engagement.
  3. An animated video featuring advanced 3D elements and interactive storytelling.

These resources will introduce young audiences to essential sustainability concepts including littering, composting, food waste reduction strategies, and circular economy principles, in accessible and entertaining formats.

 Community Impact and Business Transformation

Siel Environmental Services Limited will document the program’s impact through a comprehensive communication campaign featuring testimonials from children, educators, community members, and participating businesses. Through strategic collaboration with schools, libraries, environmental organizations, and local food establishments, the initiative aims to create lasting behavioral change across communities.

This program was specifically designed for those ready to take real action. By connecting environmental stewardship with Caribbean culinary traditions, we’re creating a sustainability model that respects our cultural identity while addressing critical climate challenges.

The programme will work hand-in-hand with restaurants, hotels, and other food service providers to:

  • Conduct waste audits and implement reduction strategies.
  • Train staff in food waste reduction, inventory control and portioning.
  • Highlight success stories of businesses that are leading the change.
  • Drive awareness through digital media, storytelling and events.

By reducing food waste, businesses not only cut costs and improve operations, but also contribute to national climate resilience, food security, and public health.

This initiative is funded by the European Union through the 11th European Development Fund (EDF), with support from the Organisation of ACP States. It’s a key part of Creative Caribbean’s mission to foster sustainable, inclusive growth in the region’s cultural and creative sectors.
