My compost is just a pile of mush – what am I doing wrong?

First of all, let me just commend you for even starting the process of composting on your own. You are the real superstar!

Let us break down some facts about the process. People think that if they throw out their skins and peelings under the mango tree outside that they are composting but actually you’re not. Composting is the happy marriage between what comes from your kitchen (food scraps including coffee grounds, bolied rice and even pasta) and what is in your yard (dry grass, twigs, leaves etc.). If either one is missing from that equation, composting is not happening, decompostion is.

Composting is like making a great lasagna – the layers are important. You won’t just pile the meat on without the pasta, right? The same process applies here. So to determine the cause of the mush, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I mixing both my kitchen and yard waste?
  • Did I layer them?

If the answer to either one of those questions is no, then it’s back to the drawing board. Just to ensure you’re doing it right, you can always sign up for our next composting class HERE. Remember it is not always about doing things better but sometimes we simply need to do better things. If the answer to either one of those questions is no, then it’s back to the drawing board.
