Good morning, good evening, good night!! Not sure where you are when you’re reading this but I know one of those greetings will work..lol
Today I want to talk about positive behaviour change and how it affects every single thing you do – whether it be at home, work or in society in general.
Let’s look at this scenario – who else besides me goes through this??
I’m a mom of two toddlers (a 4 year old and a 2 year old) and every single day I have to tell them to put their toys back after they’re done playing with them -EVERY….SINGLE…. DAY!!!
Now I’ve decided to teach them that when they are finished, they must put their toys back otherwise they can’t play with them the next day, so I remind them, I hide them or if I put them away, they get banned from their toys for a bit as a consequence for not doing it.
Because if every day those toys are left there and they keep piling up, won’t that make the place untidy and it become uncomfortable?
Well that’s how it is with litter too – if we keep dropping our garbage everywhere, the place would look untidy and it would be really uncomfortable to live in, right?
So now I introduce Community-based Social Marketing (CBSM). It teaches us step by step how we can start changing our behaviours by giving us the necessary tools.
For example, if you’re like me, I’m sure you forget sometimes!! I forget to take my meds or take my reusable shopping bag with me. So one of the things I do, is I write reminders in places I see often; so the bathroom, the refrigerator, the bedroom. These reminders are called Prompts in CBSM and are very useful in encouraging people to engage in positive behaviours.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction and I want to add whether positive or negative – kudos to my husband for adding that part 🙂
So how do you want your actions to impact on the environment? Positively or negatively? – you choose!!
